Other popular attractions in Portsmouth More beautiful historic houses are available for touring than can be included here. And there are other fun things to do at the harbor right in Portsmouth as well. The Warner House Admirers of colonial art will enjoy the dramatic wall murals in the hallway, like the stairway mural of two Iroquois Sachems. These are the oldest colonial wall paintings still in place in the United States, although the artist is now unknown. This urban brick mansion is one of the oldest surviving houses in the area, built in 1716 to 1718 by Captain Archibald Macpheadris for his bride, Sarah Wentworth, daughter of New Hampshire's governor, John Wentworth. The house is named for its long-lived merchant owner, Jonathan Warner, living in the house from 1760 to 1814. You'll see collections of children's toys as well as stately furniture and portraits. St. John's Church St. John's Church, where President George Washington attended services on November 1, 1789. On exhibit is the chair Washington sat on, as well as a display of a "Vinegar Bible." Deep Sea Fishing and Whale Watching Try Al Gauron Deep Sea Fishing and Whale Watching located in Portsmouth. Take a five hour cruise to see the whales daily during July and August. Some past riders have seen humpback, finback and minke whales plus dolphins and large sharks. Don't forget your jacket or your camera. You can also try all day, half day or 2 hour night fishing. Also available on some Mondays is a 12 hour fishing marathon, giving you a chance to travel out further than the shorter fishing tours. Fish to catch are cod, haddock, mackerel, and bluefish. |
