Nearby Cities If you finally exhaust all that Portsmouth has to offer, or you just want a change of pace, many nearby towns are worth a day trip or two. Kittery, Maine Spend some time in Kittery, less than two miles from Portsmouth. Besides all the outlet shopping, you can see other historic sites in Kittery. Facing the Portsmouth Harbor, the Badger House was originally built around 1790 and remodeled in 1824 by Captain Samuel Badger. Badger's devotion to building ships is evident. Lady Pepperell House, built for the widow of Sir William Pepperell in 1760, now privately owned, is open for tours several days a year. You can also enjoy some relaxing time at the beach at Cresent Beach especially if you enjoy bird watching. Picnic at Fort Foster, overlooking scenic views of Portsmouth Harbor, Whaleback Lighthouse, and Isles of Shoals. A playground is included for the kids. Neddick, Maine Hike along 15 miles of hiking trails or enjoy the beach and picnic areas at Cape Neddick Lighthouse and Recreation Area York Harbor Golfers enjoy Ledges Golf Course. These 18- holes are one of the most scenic courses on the seacoast. You can also see and learn all about lobstering on special 50 minute cruises in the harbor. Or go for the beautiful lighthouses, historic homes or island views you'll see as you cruise. For the kids, you might visit York's Wild Kingdom, a zoo and amusement park. With rare species like a White Bengal tiger, petting zoo, paddle boats, and miniature golf course, your sure to find something fun to do. |
